Il Était Une Fois

Il Était Une Fois

Once upon a time tales from real couples over 30. No fairies.

Met in the Wild

S. & T.

Together six months. Met on a tennis court when he tried to impress her with his serve and double faulted. Their second date was Wimbledon on the sofa. They are now planning a trip to Roland Garros.

How did you actually meet?

"We were playing mixed doubles with mutual friends. He clearly wanted to show off — which I clocked immediately. Then he double faulted on match point and I had to look away so he wouldn’t see me laughing. He asked for my number to ‘rematch.’ I said sure."

First impression, honestly?

"Trying a little too hard. But in a way that was kind of endearing once I got over myself." — S.

"She had this expression when I double faulted. Like she was filing it away. I knew I needed to recover quickly." — T.

When did you know?

"Second date. We watched Wimbledon and argued about everything — line calls, tactics, whether Djokovic is likeable. I didn’t want it to end."

What does it look like now, day to day?

"We play mixed doubles every Sunday. He’s actually quite good — I’ll give him that now. We’re going to Roland Garros in the spring, which feels like a plot twist I did not see coming."

Their haiku.

Double fault, game point
He asked for my number, though
Rematch. Six months on.

The Apps Aren’t Dead — A. ♥ R.

“A broey looking guy liked me on Hinge. Didn’t look like my type. But one of his prompt responses caught my eye: ‘Green flags I look for: friendships that last over 10 years.’ The company you keep says a lot about you. Meeting his friends in the past few months has made me love him even more.”
